Sat at the mouth of the River Dart, boats are big in all senses in Dartmouth. It’s home to the Britannia Naval College and although relatively narrow, the river is naturally deep here so you’re likely to spot a visiting warship, and even the odd cruise liner, moored up alongside the rows of sailing and motor yachts. You’d be forgiven for thinking that the river and sea is the focus of everyone’s lives in this pretty town – even the numerous art galleries seem to take the majority of their inspiration from the water. But if you visit during the town’s famous regatta you’ll realise that it even goes beyond that – from crabbing contests to vintage boat parades, this is a town that eats, sleeps and dreams of life afloat. The regatta also features a spectacular air show, with past visits including the Black Cats helicopter display team, the Red Arrows, an RAF Typhoon and, with a nod to yesteryear, the Battle of Britain Memorial flight – an event not to be missed.
